About Us
The Farm "On Mayhaw Hill" was started in 1992 by Reuben "Spec" Sherrill. A U.S. Army veteran and retired Louisiana State Trooper with a family background in agriculture. His work ethic shown in his meticulous layout of the orchards. He would explore the bayou and swamps where mayhaws were known to thrive. This led him to bring numerous native species into the orchards. He also worked with other growers to develop grafted varieties. Our orchards are full of different varieties that some people have never heard of. Spec was also very active in the Louisiana Mayhaw Association. An association dedicated to the education and promotion of mayhaws and mayhaw farms across the south. The farm On Mayhaw Hill also won multiple awards for it's jelly. Spec was meticulous with his cleaning and processing techniques to produce the cleanest and clearest jelly with the best taste possible. Other jelly producers dilute their juice so it would stretch their profits. Spec didn't believe in sacrificing quality for profit. Spec passed away in 2018 at the age of 84 after his battle with cancer. Even after chemo treatments you could find him working on the farm.

After his death Spec's nephew Kerry, also a veteran and Professional Firefighter, decided to keep the farm alive. With a home and shop remodel; improvements in diseases prevention equipment; and updated harvesting techniques... the farm is alive and well. There has been a lot of catching up with pruning and general clearing and we have come a long way. Our future plans include growing seedlings; grafting trees available for sale to the public; and participate in the festival-market circuit across the south. We are working to have our jelly available in multiple stores in our area as well. We hope to expand our footprint and promote knowledge of the Louisiana Mayhaw through a Legacy that was built on quality and work ethic.
